TOOLS AND RESOURCES

USE THESE TO GET STARTED!

BANNERS

    • Light weigh MUSLIN, natural fiber, is cheap to purchase $1.50--$3.00/yd for 36” width (esp’ly if ON SALE at Jo-Anns, or purchased in bulk)

    • Old BED SHEETS, CURTAINS, TABLE CLOTHS also work fine

    • Old flags and promo banners made of vinyl can be repurposed

    • Drop cloths can work, but need priming, are heavy and you need to buy them too!

    • Plastic tarps can be used-- spell out letters with DUCT TAPE, paint will not adhere well

    • Water based, cheapest HOUSE Paint you can get ( LATEX) -- same for base coat/primer if needed.

    • Art acrylic is waterbased, just more expensive

    • Water based = easier to clean up, better for environment, better for breathing while painting too!

    • Use GROMMETS-- either purchase a metal grommet kit ( $10-15  at hardware store)

    • or MAKE yer own reinforced holes-- reinforce with DUCT TAPE, or add sewn reinforcement

    • or DON”T make holes, instead ADD LOOPS or TIES to the edges/ corners and SEW them into the banner

    • Sew around the edges/ make HEMS to add integrity and strength to banner edges. PAINTING also adds strength, you can just paint around the edges 1-2” to do that even if not painting the whole banner.

    • IF you need to WEIGHT the bottom: don’t use something that will hurt people if it falls; use a bag of sand, bag of water, and stitch a pocket into the bottom of the banner where you can insert that bag of sand, for ex Can also use rolled up newspaper in a sewn, taped or stapled pocket.

    • USE ZipTies, STRING or ROPE, WIRE, DUCT TAPE to fasten banner to railing or fence
